River Report 8/8/18

River Report 8/8/18

With very spotty rain storms the past few days some parts of Vt are or were recently flooded and some are still low. Guess that’s normal but we’ve seen some pretty crazy wheather with strong wind and lightning mixed in. Yesterday in Middlebury we got almost an inch of rain in 15 minuets. On Saturday some friends were fishing the Otter. They claimed Rutland got a two plud inch downpour and the Otter rose 3’ while they were floating. That same day I was fishing some Tweed River tribs in Pittsfield. They were very high but fishable and cold 62 degrees midday. By Sunday afternoon they had dropped to a healthy looking level and the fish were super active.

Hope to see you this weekend at the American Museum of Fly Fishing in Manchester. Info below

  1. Client: Ted from Philly trying fly fishing for the first time on Monday.

Ok back to fishing the water temps are still warm across Vt. I’ve found some brooks as low as 62 degrees but more likely they have been 67/68. The large rivers are still in the mid 70’s. Last Friday on my way to meet up with Ralph to fish Lake Champlain I stopped at Lewis Creek near rte 7 to get a temp. It was 80!

Caught several nice Bass on Champlain with Ralph Kucharek. All on Black poppers!
Katy with her first Bass on the fly! It hit a Fat Albert in swift water.
Julz working on casting and catching some Fallfish at the same time. We wish you a safe summer fighting fires in Colorado!
Tweed River tribs were fishing great last weekend.
Caught a very nice Brookie in this spot on an Green Caddis Humpy.
Recent family outing that was lots of fun. It was the first time they had picked up a fly rod. Visiting the Killington area from Southern US.
Amy with a mini LMB. We hit a small pond using 3wts and dry flies/ Hoppers. She had a blast, caught 10 of them and loved the art of casting. This was after 2 hours on the Otter. She mentioned it was a nice change of pace from living in LA.
His first fish on a fly was a Pike on a BZ ISO Nymph! Had it dropped off from a Wolly Bugger under a indicator.
Jen Goodale crushing fish on poppers from her kayak. Including her first Pike on the fly that day.

After tomorrow the weather looks pretty good through Wednesday. Maybe even a few nights in the 50’s. Hopefully that will cool water temps a bit! This weekend should be great fishing. I’m sure BZ and I will hit some mountain brooks in Southern Vt as we’ll be in Manchester for the AMFF fly fishing festival on Saturday. See you there! -BC

Little LL Salmon on a Stimulator. Was surprised as I was targeting Brook Trout.

Book a trip soon. The fishing has been great. We have guides all over the state.
