River up and down the state have been in so so conditions, however fishing them has been good. No significant precipitation and warming temps have made most water shed below avg in levels, and temps into the upper sixties. I received an inch of rain in the last 24 hours , bringing levels only up to avg. on the Lamoille and just off color.

The refreshing rain is what we need, however it will only help a little with the heat wave( over 90 for 3+ days) approaching and no precip in the 7 days out look.

Trout fishing should be good through the weekend, after that, you’ll need your thermometer if your the catch and release type. This is the time of year to start targeting warm water species and Mountain brook trout.

If you venture out after brookies you only need a few flies. Mostly any high floating dry fly will do , Ausable Wulffs, stimulators and Royal Coachmen to name a few. Small nymphs PT’s, copper johns and Hare’s ears. Streamers are also effective, Mickey Finns and muddler minnows. It’s best to have a short rod for making short accurate casts. A 7 foot 3wt that can role cast well is most effective. Be prepared for bugs and poison ivy. Enjoy your hike nd the serenity of a cool babbling brook during the dog days of summer.
