VT River Report 8/13/17

What a great time of the year to be Trout Fishing in VT! The smaller mountain streams are perfect right now. Water temps are between 57-62 degrees which is very cool for this time of year.

Friday evening I got motivated to grab the Orvis Superfine Carbon 3wt. and a few Stimulators and hit a favorite Otter Creek trib for Brook Trout. While changing a leader and picking out the fly I put the thermometer in the river. 62 in the afternoon on a hot sunny day!

About a 5 minute walk upriver I began casting into the beautiful plunge pools. This Brook Trout slammed the Stimulator and after a quick photograph I got a great release. Next pool up river I got an even bigger one. Each pool had lots of hungry fish! The colors of each Brookie is like a painting and they are very aggressive this time of year.

Besides the Stimulator I like to use the Ausable Wulff, Green Caddis, Floater in the pool, the Usual and Dave’s Hopper for Brookies.

On the way home I stopped at a favorite area much lower on the river. It was 64 degrees. I switched up to a foam Hopper and a beadhead / flashback PT Nymph Dropper. The third hole I fished this nice Brown came up to the surface and smashed the Hopper. It was in the tail of the pool and in some pretty swift water. It bent the 3wt. pretty good and I fought him down river into the next pool. I missed a few others and right at dark a slab pounced on a different terrestrial called the Fat Albert. It was a Rainbow pushing the magical 20″ mark. I battled for a while before it came unbuttoned.

Good luck if you get out this weekend! Let us know how you do. Keep checking those water temps! BC
