First 2020 fish for me! Ate a BZ Golden Stone.

Always good to get out in January after a good thaw! The larger rivers like the Winooski and Otter are high with poor clarity. However small Lake Champlain tributaries are in great shape and mostly free of ice.

As usual I had the brooks to myself today and even managed 4 fish to the net. I took multiple fly boxes out of my vest this morning and just brought a batch of flies Brian Zinger gave me a few days ago. It felt great just having 3 different trusted patterns to choose from instead of dozens! I just fished them with confidence and the fish seemed very hungry today. I missed a ton in fast water and all the spots that looked fishy were holding fish. Get your BZ flies through

The hot fly today was a Mop Fly tied up for Steelhead so it had a bright egg cluster in the front. A Great Lake Ontario style fly that I’m going to fish locally more often after I saw the attention it got. Before today I’d never caught anything on a Mop Fly but I’m now a believer!

Had several fish chase and slash at a White Wolly Bugger but nothing landed on streamers today. My first fish of 2020 was on a BZ Golden Stone and all the rest on Mop Flies.

The rod I was using today was the Orvis Recon 10’ 5wt and it performed perfectly! I was swinging streamers, dredging deep polls with multiple nymphs/ mops, working fast riffles and working on tight light nymph tactics.

We just got a large order of new equipment for our clients to use and I think they will love the Recon in the 9’ and 10’ lengths. Lots of new Orvis Ultralight Convertable waders and new boots also. I tried those waders today and they were super comfy. We have women and children specific gear now as well!

As always on Winter adventures be safe and have fun. Falling in 35 degree water is not fun and can turn into a bad situation quickly if your not prepared. Stay semi close to your vehicle, have extra sets of clothing in the car and let someone know your plan if your going solo. Also remember to get your 2020 Vt Fishing License! (BC)
