River Report 1/8/19

Happy New Year!!
Well because of the rain storm we revived to start the New Year the Lake Champlain tribs are nearly ice free and very fishable flows. All rivers across Vt were very high on the first day of the year but have steadily dropped since then.
Got out with Nick Mayer on the first and managed one nice Bow at dark. We fished some very swift water and tried nymphing with indicators, various worms patterns and lots of split shots. I got my Bow swinging a double streamer setup and it grabbed a Black Wolly Bugger.
Going to try the bigger rivers for Pike tomorrow. Would be great to get one on the fly in January but that would nearly be a miracle! The Otter is full bank but again totally free of ice and has decent clarity. It’s very high for this time of year.
Later in the week we are expecting a few nights in a row of below zero temperatures. That could freeze up the smaller Lake Champlain tribs and halt fishing them. Be safe if you get out and remember to get the 2019 VT fishing license! (BC)
