River Report 5/31
River Report May 31st
Let it rain! It’s been a cold rainy afternoon and more rain is in the 7 day forecast. The streams & rivers across Vt have been very low with water temperatures warming up quickly.
Along with some overnight temperatures in the 40’s some more rain should keep us in a sweet spot for trout fishing for a few more weeks on the larger rivers which will get over 70 degrees later in the Summer.
Right now the fishing is fantastic for many different fish species. On days off from guiding we’ve been targeting Pike, Gar, Smallmouth Bass and Trout. All of the species above are fun to chase and it’s prime time for them right now.
Recent trips have been going great as well with lots of beginners catching there first fish ever. Some have been trout but also great practice catching Perch, Fallfish and Bass. From folks in Vt visiting friends to high school reunions to bachelor parties and corporate trips we’ve been busy!
Pike are becoming way more aggressive and really chasing and smashing flies. I’m using 7”-11” flies in Perch, Pink White, Black/Purple and other crazy color combos.
Tried some topwater as well but haven’t had any take a surface fly yet this year. But huge poppers, blockheads, Rat and Frog pattens are super fun to fish. They tend to draw some dramatic explosions and each cast and strip off a log jam or weed edge can be heart pounding with anticipation of a water wolf pouncing on it.
I prefer to target Trout and Bass with streamers and huge foam hoppers. Both have been working the past few times out. Dropping a nymph off the hopper or behind a streamer definitely has put some fish in the net as well.
So we are getting busy but still have openings for June and throughout the summer. Book a trip today!
