Rivers up and down the state are in the best shape they have been since the spring. Levels are average, temps are in the mid 60’s and the clarity is 100% on most river systems. There are exceptions though. The Winooski from Essex to the lake has been chocolate milk since mid July. It has been improving and its head waters and mountain trip are perfect and fishing well.

We have been treating our guests to some great rainbow and brook trout fishing during the ladder half of August. Warm water species have also been a great option when river temps are to warm for fishing trout. Most of the fish have come on the surface. Terrestrials pattens have been the hot flies. Any hopper pattern will do, but scorpions and Dave’s hopper style flies have been the go to.

As we move into September the fishing should continue to be good. Cooling water and air temperature as well as shorter day light hours tell the fish it’s time to put on the feed bag to prep there bodies for the winter. The main thing to focus on in September is the Isonychia hatch. This mahogany colored mayfly is the last large insect to hatch for the season. Trout love all phases of this hatch. Princes and Zug Bugs imitate the nymphs really well. Don’t be afraid to let your nymphs swing towards the bank as this species swims to the bank and emerges on the rocks. Any style of dry fly tied on a #12/10 hook with a dark brown body will do. I prefer haystack style patterns.

Check out the size of this brookie slipping though the hands.
