Fall fishing September 21, 2024

Rivers up and down the state are in good shape. We do need of some water. We haven’t received any measurable amount of rain in 2weeks so rivers could use a refresh. In that two week period, river temperatures have gone from low 60’s to high 60’s due to a stretch of mid summer type air temps. Starting today, we get back to more fall like weather with highs in the low 70s and chances of rain midweek.

Late September is a great time to fish in Vermont. Cooler days along with a colorful landscape make for an enjoyable day in the outdoors. Fishing during this time of year is great way to make the outdoor experience that much more enjoyable. Cooler water temperatures and shorter days put some species into spawn mood and others into feed mood.

Isonycia has been the main hatch to match recently, especially in the nymph phase. Blue wing olives are also making their presence know, particularly when morning fog hovers over the water in the mornings. As October rolls around BWOs become the main aquatic insect that trout feed on. They are the last mayfly of the season when many other food sources are no longer available. Terrestrial patterns are still a good option until leaves start to fall.
