Rivers had been in good shape. Levels were average, temps on big river were in the mid to upper 60s and clarity was good with little rain. Fishing was following suit.

That all changed Sunday morning when we got 1.5 inches of rain in a thunderstorm around day break. Top that off with air temps in the mid 90s today and tomorrow, large rivers will be dirty and water temps will be over 70 degrees.

Thing will be much improved by next weekend with air temps dropping back to the 70’s by Thursday, and some rain to start off the weekend.

This type of weather is a reminder for C&R fishers to have a thermometer on hand. Every other fish can be caught and released back into 70 degree water except trout.

As trout water approaches 70, oxygen absorption into the water decreases, once at and over trout really start to struggle with respiration. Fish still feed and can be caught, the tough part is the release. If you catch a trout in 70+ water, even if you get him to the net quick, get the hook out and return it quickly, they will struggle to recover due to the oxygen depleted water.

No fear in Vermont , there are plenty of small stream that stay in the 60 if your a trout bum. There are also plenty of warm water species you can target with fly rod. Our guides know the places to go to give you a fun day, on water that is fish friendly.
