Tight lines! We’ve been getting plenty, particularly on smallmouth bass. These big ol’ bass are spawning up just about every trib to lake Champlain right now and can be targeted until early June when most head back to the Lake. River condition have been up and down as we keep getting a ton of rain every weekend. The day of this picture clarity was only a foot. In these conditions you might need to go through a number of different types of streamer patterns and colors to figure out what the fish want. Fish can see better than we can in dirty water, but they also use their lateral line to detect movement. So using a fly that rattles , or even big bushy fly’s that push water on the retrieve will help find your presentation. This particular day, they wanted big and black. 6inch Clouser style flies.
Lucky it hasn’t rain much during the week, so waiting until the later part of the week has been the best fishing. This pattern does look to change in the 7 day. So, pick your day to fish wisely and don’t be afraid of fish off colored water.
